My Friend Doesn't Keep Shabbat

Question

A friend booked a flight to come and see me in Israel, unfortunately she has booked to fly on shabbat. I suggested she change it but she hasn't. What should I do?

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

As you clearly know, the observance of Shabbat is so important.

We too are saddened to hear that you’re friend does not appreciate the holy and special gift that Shabbat is.

You did the right thing. You expressed your disappointment in your friend’s decision to fly on Shabbat in a kind and gentle manner. This is exactly what we are expected to do. We are to do whatever we can to encourage Jews to observe Shabbat (and all mitzvot for that matter) in a respectful manner. We must show them the beauty of a Torah lifestyle.

Hopefully your influence on your friend will have an impact and she won’t make such decisions in the future.
