3D Printing Judaica

Question

Hi Rabbi I just bought this modern 3D printer and I planning to produce fascinating Judicia items like Kiddush cups and with the upcoming festival I am planning to print an actual shofar it"s gonna sound like the real thing what to say are there any halachic issues I should be aware of?

Answer

Thank you for your question.

It is truly amazing what one can do with a 3D printer, and like you mentioned one can really use it to produce beautiful pieces and so you are for sure in the right direction and it is a great merit that you will have a part of using modern technology to enhance and beautify the items we use in the service for Hashem.

The source of using most beautiful items is brought in the Chumash, when Am Israel was crossing the Red Sea which Hashem Miraculously split they sang Shirah which starts “oz Yashir Mosheh” and then they said:

שמות פרק טו, ב

(ב) עָזִּי וְזִמְרָת יָהּ וַיְהִי לִי לִישׁוּעָה זֶה אֵלִי וְאַנְוֵהוּ אֱלֹהֵי אָבִי וַאֲרֹמְמֶנְהוּ:

“Zeh Keili Ve’anvehu” “this is my g-d and I will glorify him”

One may ask how, and in what way do I glorify him? Explains the Talmud in Tractate Shabbos 133b:

תלמוד בבלי מסכת שבת דף קלג עמוד ב

דתניא: זה אלי, ואנוהו - התנאה לפניו במצות; עשה לפניו סוכה נאה, ולולב נאה, ושופר נאה, ציצית נאה, ספר תורה נאה וכתוב בו לשמו בדיו נאה, בקולמוס נאה, בלבלר אומן וכורכו בשיראין נאין.

It's taught: 'This is my G-d and I will glorify Him' - beautify yourself before Him with commandments. Make a beautiful sukkah, a beautiful lulav, a beautiful shofar, beautiful tzitzit, and a beautiful Torah scroll written in His name with beautiful ink, using a fine quill, by a skilled scribe, and bind the Torah in beautiful wrappings.

So, we see from here how important it is to not only perform the mitzvah but to do it in a glorified and majestic way. This Mitzvah could be understood that just as Hashem created for us a beautiful world for example the delicious foods, that not only taste delicious but also have such beautiful colors, and sweet smells, He could have simply provided nourishment like vitamins, creating a tree that grows vitamin tablets for us to take with a cup of water. However, in His great kindness, He gives us all the vitamins we need in a beautiful way by creating the most delicious foods. Similarly, when we perform mitzvot, we should not merely say, "Ah, any tefillin will do," but rather, we should serve Hashem in the most mehudar and beautiful way, just as Hashem does for us.

So circling back to your question, Yes! There is a need for guidance on how and what items could be manufactured using a 3D printer, for example printing a Kiddush cup is a great idea or challah knives. However printing a shofar would not be permitted since it would not be valid for the mitsvah of Tekiat Shofar, and I’ll explain why;

It is written in the book of Numbers 29,1 That Rosh Hashanah is a “day of blowing the Shofar” (יוֹם תְּרוּעָה יִהְיֶה לָכֶם) and a shofar is a Ram’s horn. So the mitsvah is specifically to blow a shofar sound using a real horn and therefore using a 3D printed horn even though you may produce the same sounds as a Real Shofar it would not be valid to use for the Mitsvah of Te'kiat shofar. The Talmud writes that the reason we use a Ram's horn is as follows:

תלמוד בבלי מסכת ראש השנה דף טז עמוד א

אמר רבי אבהו: למה תוקעין בשופר של איל? - אמר הקדוש ברוך הוא: תקעו לפני בשופר של איל, כדי שאזכור לכם עקידת יצחק בן אברהם, ומעלה אני עליכם כאילו עקדתם עצמכם לפני.

Rabbi Abbahu said: Why do we blow the ram's horn (shofar)? Hashem said, "Blow the ram's horn before Me, so I will remember (for you) the binding of Yitzchak, the son of Abraham. And I will consider it as if you had bound yourselves before Me.

That is why it is important to have a Ram's Horn since this will evoke the merit of Akeidas Yitschok, on Rosh Hashana, the day of judgment.

I Would like to end with the words of the Holy Rambam, Brought in Hilchos Teshuvah (Perek 3):

Although the blowing of the shofar on Rosh Hashanah is a decree written in the Scripture, it contains a hint, as if saying: 'Awake, sleepers from your sleep, and slumberers, arise from your slumber. Examine your deeds, return in repentance, and remember your Creator……. look to your souls. Improve your ways and your deeds, and let each of you abandon his evil path and his not-good thoughts.

Wishing you much success in all your endeavors.
