Childbirth Outside of Marriage

Question

Son has a partner...both Jewish...but the son and partner did not marry but areידוע בציבור They now have a son and he has had his britt but as grandpatents wondering will this child be able to marry under a cuppa

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

A child born to a Jewish mother is Jewish, whether or not the mother was married to the father when she got pregnant.

Of course, if the mother was halachically married to a different man when she got pregnant the child would be illegitimate. However, it does not appear by your question that this is a concern.

It should be noted, however, that all relations outside of marriage are to forbidden according to Torah law. The mitzva of “Be fruitful and multiply” is a mitzva that is concurrent with the mitzva of marriage.
