Kosher collagen peptides
Question
Hi, I bought these collagen peptides from Iherb, and they are marked kosher. It also says "made with dairy" but I'm not sure if it means it's kosher dairy, parve or maybe even Besari? Can u please advise Here's the link to the product I refer to: https://il.iherb.com/pr/vital-proteins-collagen-peptides-unflavored-1-25-lbs-567-g/71356?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw_Na1BhAlEiwAM-dm7FBkF_hdgtVQuJf-nLBo7AOunAZPI9k2rxi-hGWOPWXayBCjiKegZhoC-zAQAvD_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds
Answer
Shalom!
Thank you for your question.
Although I am not familiar with the hechsher on the package, I can tell you that the product is completely pareve. In fact, the package itself clearly states that there is no dairy in the ingredients.
What you see here is a very common labeling practice. In today’s world of instant lawsuits for any possible infraction or insult, companies are extra careful. Even in products that contain no milk, a milk (or fish, or nuts, etc.) warning will be included on the package. Not as part of the ingredients, but as a separate notice. This is usually because the same company does indeed produce items containing milk or fish or nuts, etc., and there is a minute concern for cross contamination. Perhaps minute particles of “nut dust” or “dairy dust” could be in the air of the factory and settle into the products.
Truth be told, those who are radically allergic to milk or nuts can indeed be affected by even minute particles of “nut dust” in the product, and in fact, it could be fatal. However, even though a person’s allergies might start up at even minute parts-per-million, halacha does not recognize this small amount of content as being significant. Indeed, once an ingredient is less than 1/60th of the product, it is considered to be non-existent.
So again, the product appears to be completely pareve from the perspective of halacha but if you have severe allergies, it would not hurt to consult with your allergist/doctor.
