Charging For a Special Hearse

Question

What is the halachic position where a Jewish funeral director is unable to provide a wheelchair accessible hearse requested by the mourner? Is it reasonable for the funeral director to ask the mourner for a contribution towards the cost of hiring a suitable vehicle.

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

The halacha allows the funeral director to charge more for a wheelchair accessible hearse.

It certainly would be a nice gesture for him to provide this for free, but, ultimately, he is halachically permitted to charge for it.
