Traveling to Israel during time of threat

Question

Is it wrong of me to ask my orthodox observing sister if she would cancel flight reservations for tomorrow and postpone her planned trip to Israel until the threat of an attack is less imminent? She said there is always the risk of violence in Israel anyway.

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

The issue of what is defined as "dangerous" in halacha is a very extensive and complex topic.

However, one such definition of danger is "normative" vs. "non-normative."

It is currently "normative" for people to come to Israel. Life is proceeding as normal in most of the country. Yes, precautions must be taken, but at the current time, the "death rate" does not preclude coming to Israel at this time.

On the other hand, the times in Israel are indeed more "queazy" nowadays than usual, and it would not be wrong for you to advise your sister to reconsider.

But, as mentioned, if she wants to come to Israel anyway, there is nothing halachically wrong with her doing so.

With blessings for peace in the land!
