Opening "Igloo" (Freeze Pops) on Shabbos

Question

Can you open igloos and shlooks normally on Shabbos (make a slit with a knife) or do you have to bite them open? In other words is there a problem with making a פתח יפה בחותלות? Thank you

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

Shlukim: one may not cut it in the middle, since this is an issur of "mechatech" making from one shlook into two, so it should be prepared before Shabbos.

However, cutting the shluukim at the ends or an igluu is permitted on Shabbos since the plastic is to be thrown away and its not considered as making pe'sach chashuv.

It is also important to ensure that no letters or pictures are torn in the process.
