An Avel During the Three Weeks

Question

How does the three weeks differ for someone who is already an avail?

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

On the whole, the observances of the Three Weeks by one who is in the year of mourning for a parent will resemble one another. Though there are some distinctions worth noting (according to the Ashkenazi custom):

1. During the year of mourning it is forbidden to attend a social event of almost any kind, whereas during the Three Weeks social event, without music, are permitted.

2. The laws of buying new garments are stricter during the year of mourning than they are during the Three Weeks

3. During the year of mourning haircuts are permitted under certain conditions while haircuts are forbidden during the Three Weeks.

4. During Shloshim one may bathe but during the Nine Days it is forbidden/restricted.

5. during the nine days one may not eat meat or drink wine whereas during the shivah one may eat meat and drink wine.
