Kashering Brand New Pots

Question

Do we have to Kasher a brand new pot (before using it the first time)

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question!

Yes, there is a lesser-known practice to kasher even brand new pots and pans before using them for the first time.(1)

The reason for this is because many pots and pans are coated with all kinds of finishes and glazes in order to give the utensils a shinier or more attractive look. Some of these industrial glazes contain nonkosher fats or oils. Since it is very difficult to determine if the glaze on your new pot is kosher or non-kosher, some have the custom to kasher them before their first use.

Pots covered with something like emile, does not need to be kashered but regular metal pots should best be kashered before their first use.

Allow me to also remind you that all new metal and glass utensils must be immersed in a mikva before their first use.
