Inducing Labor

Question

Hi Rabbi Is it OK to induce labour?

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question!

As a general rule, and barring an urgent medical need, inducing labor is generally frowned upon, as it appears to be forcing God to bring a person into the world before the time God might have designated for that person to arrive. According to Jewish thought, not only is God a partner with the parents at conception but He is also a partner at birth.

However, when inducing labor is a medical urgency, then of course it is permitted. since this will be considered the right time. One should consult 2 doctors on whether inducing is the right course of action. (if in doubt one should seek halachic guidance)
