Relighting Shabbat Candles Inquiry

Question

I bought a new box of Shabbos candles both went out after 15 minutes, wicks were gone. Could I have taken two new candles, made the Brachot, and lit them or was I already into Shabbat?

Answer

Thank you for your question.
Once the Shabbat candles are lit, Shabbat begins as the act of lighting signifies accepting the sanctity of Shabbat. Thus, refraining from relighting the candles was the correct decision.
