Exploring Jewish Law and culture

Question

Dear Rabbi. I have recently decided to learn more about my Jewish Heritage. My mother is Jewish but non practicing, and my father (Rest in peace) was an Orthodox Jew. I’ve already obtained The Torah, but what books would you recommend on learning about Jewish culture? Kind regards, Joshua

Answer

Thank you for your question,

I would like to first Congratulate you on your interest and seriousness in wanting to know more about Jewish Culture, I would suggest starting with the book called 'Mishna Berura' (משנה ברורה). It is a work of Halacha that breaks down the world of Halacha in segments, so as you study it bit by bit you will become knowledgeable of all the Jewish culture and laws. it was authored by Rabbi Yisrael Meir Kagan, more widely known by the name of another of his seminal works, the Chafetz Chaim. Born in 1838 in Zhetel, Poland (then part of the Russian Empire). you can find the 'Misna Berura' even with an English translation and explanation to help you along the way. I would suggest this English edition  https://www.judaicaplace.com/category/112/854/mishnah-berurah-in-english/

wishing you lots of success going forward.
