Kashering a chametz blender for Pesach

Question

I have a glass blender jug with a heavy plastic lid. It has never been used for hot food, and has only been used for Chalavi or Parve, but may have had Chametz in it. It has not been used for over a year. Can I use it for Pesach without Kashering? If not, how do I Kasher it?

Answer

Shalom,

According to the Sephardi custom, there is no need to kasher it, since Sephardi believe that glass utensils do not absorb taste altogether.

For Ashkenazim, glass is considered to absorb chametz  (leaven), and kashering it is impossible.

Chametz  can be absorbed through heat as well as by means of davar charif  ('sharp foods'), for instance, by means of processing bread and onions together. It can also be absorbed through 'soaking', i.e. leaving a liquid substance in a vessel for 24 hours.

If the blender has not been used for any of the above, it is sufficient to rinse it thoroughly. This way it may be used during Pesach.
