Using electric candles on Shabbat

Question

Is it permissible to use electric candles on Shabot and do they need to remain on until havdalaha ?

Answer

Hello,

Your question is not completely clear to me. There are two possibilities for the formulation of the question, and I will try to answer both.

A. Use for lighting. It is permissible to light electric lamps before Shabbat and leave them on. It is forbidden to turn them off on Shabbat.

There is an option to purchase a timer that can turn the lights on and off at desired times. The timer is set before Shabbat and it turns on and off the lights at the desired times.

B. Use as Shabbat candles.

It is a mitzvah to light candles in honor of Shabbat. The common custom is to light two candles, and some people light more.

These candles are usually lit using wax or oil candles, but if necessary, it is permissible to light electric candles.

There is no obligation for these candles to remain lit throughout the entire Shabbat, but rather during the mealtime on Friday night.

I hope this clarifies your question.
