Traveling a Distance for the Mitzvah of Sukkah

Question

For someone who is unable to build a Sukkah at his home (he was hosted on the first day of the holiday and now he eats bread and baked goods in the synagogue's Sukkah) and can sleep in a Sukkah about a half-hour drive away without his family, should he travel or sleep in his house? Thanks

Answer

Shalom and joyous holidays!
The way to figure out if you are obligated to make an effort to sit and sleep in the Sukkah depends on the question of what you would do if there was no reasonable place to sleep in his house. Would you make an effort and travel a distance, or would you be willing to find some perch to sleep on in the house, even under those difficult circumstances.
All this is as far as your obligation goes; but certainly, the one who makes an extra effort to fulfill the commandment, receives a great reward.
