Yom Kippur Fast - After Valve Replacement
Question
My 84-year-old mother underwent a procedure for valve replacement about a week ago. According to the doctors, there is no reason for her not to fast. But we are concerned for her well-being. How should she conduct herself regarding the fast?
Answer
Shalom!
If, according to the doctor, she can fast, she should begin to fast.
Be with her throughout the day, and see how the fast affects her.
If there is exceptional weakness, dehydration, dizziness, seeing black, etc., she should drink ‘by measurements’, that is, 40 ml of fluid every 9 minutes.
It is preferable that this be grape juice, tea with honey, and the like [and not water], so that the fluids will also provide her with energy.
