Sleeping Pill on Shabbat

Question

Is it permitted for someone who needs sleep for his health and finds it difficult to fall asleep to take a sleeping pill on Shabbat?

Answer

For children up to the age of Bar Mitzvah, it is permitted. For adults, it is only permitted in cases of great distress or if it’s necessary for their health. It is advisable, if possible, to mix the pill into food or drink before Shabbat. This way it will be permitted to take the pill without a problem.
