The Time of Impurity in Childbirth

Question

Distancing at the beginning of childbirth - We wanted to know from when one should start observing the distancing at the beginning of childbirth, water breaking, mucus plug release, onset of contractions... and if there are more details on the matter (for example, also if one should observe distancing but is it permissible to apply the stickers of the 'TENS-birth' device)

Answer

Shalom!
The onset of contractions, and the release of the mucus plug - when not mixed with blood - do not cause the woman to become prohibited.
A woman becomes prohibited in childbirth in several ways:
a. When any bleeding begins.
b. When she has the vaginal opening of three fingers - 6 centimeters.
c. Strong contractions that make it difficult for her to move. [A situation that usually occurs in the delivery room].
d. A strong water break, which usually comes with bleeding. [But a trickle of water does not make her prohibited, if you do not see blood in the water.]
e. Cervical sweep
When a woman becomes prohibited due to the onset of childbirth, this includes all laws of Niddah, touching, looking, etc.
However, if the woman is in the middle of childbirth, and she needs help, and there is no one else who can help her — it is permitted for the husband to help her, but only as needed. But if there is someone else who can help her [mother, medical team, doula, etc.], the husband should be careful to keep all the laws of distancing.
