Insurance for Cohanim
Question
There are many doctors who only accept patients that have supplemental insurance besides the regular universal health insurance. Do Cohanim have to buy this additional insurance so that, if they are in need of medical care, they will not have to go to a hospital, which could be contaminated with the impurity of a dead body? Instead, they could go to a doctor with a private practice. Or maybe, since right now they don’t need medical care, and may not need it in the future, they don’t have to prepare themselves for this eventuality?
Answer
They don’t have to buy supplemental insurance. But if they do require medical treatment, they’ll have to seek out a place free of the impurity of a dead body – unless their condition is life-threatening.
