Men's Mikveh in a Vessel

Question

Shalom to the Rav,If there is a large vessel that holds forty se’ah but is not attached to the ground, is it valid as a mikveh for men for tevilas Ezra — either only bedi’eved or even lechatchila? And is pouring nine kav preferable to this type of mikveh? If possible, please present this question to our Rav shlit”a, since this question comes up often in the vacation areas in Europe. Thank you very much.

Answer

Shalom uVracha,

The response of our teacher, HaGaon Rav Amrom Fried shlit”a:

  1. Immersion there, is effective bedi’eved, but not lechatchila.
  2. This immersion should be regarded in the same way as the pouring of nine kav.

This is explained in the Magen Avraham, Orach Chaim 606:9, and in the glosses of R’ Akiva Eiger, Yoreh De’ah 88.

See Pischei Teshuvah, Yoreh De’ah 88, who is lenient in this matter like the Halcha of nine kav;  as discussed there. Also see the sefer Galus Aliyos, Mikva’os, chapter 8.
