You are correct that it is indeed a sin to loot graves and coffins or to otherwise benefit from, or desecrate the dead. This is due to the inherent holiness of the human body and the reverence we are required to show for the dead.
Furthermore, “looting” is a synonym for “stealing.” It is forbidden for any human being to take something that is not theirs.
