Defining Depression as an Illness

Question

A family member of mine is in an unstable mental state with deep grief and depression. Most of the day, he is in bed and rarely leaves the house. Is he defined as sick in terms of Sabbath and fasts?

Answer

Dear …!
He is considered a patient whose life is not in danger for all matters.
And if there are sharp changes in his mood, or other psychotic symptoms, he is considered a patient whose life is in danger.
