Excommunication for Violating the Ban of Rabbeinu Gershom

Honorable Rabbi! I have looked at an internet chat of other people without their knowledge. Is this a violation of the ban of Rabbeinu Gershom? And if so, does it need to be annulled, and how? [See Shulchan Aruch, section Yoreh Deah, chapter 334, §22 in the Remo]

Our teacher, Rabbi Amram Fried, SHLITA, has ruled that there is no need to annul the excommunication.
