Pruzbul for each child

Question

(At the end of a sabbatical year, certain types of loans are forgiven. In order that one’s loans not be forgiven, one has to file a special document, which is called a “pruzbul”.) I noticed that this year, several rabbinical authorities wrote that one has to file a pruzbul for each one of one’s kids. What happened this time, that did not occur in previous sabbatical years?

Answer

Several years ago, Israel’s government decided to deposit funds to a savings plan for every child whose parents get child benefits from the state. This plan is called “savings for every child”. Because of this, there is a new reality, that never existed before, in which every child in the state of Israel, from the age of one month and up, lends his money to different investment funds.

Because of this, our teacher, Rabbi Fried shlit”a and other rabbis instructed the public that the father has to write in his pruzbul that he includes in it all the debts that are owed to his underage children of both sexes. The reason that the father is able to file a pruzbul for his kids is that he’s serving as their guardian.

Have a good year
