Targum Jonathan to Yeshayahu 11:1

Question

Hi, In Targum Jonathan to Yeshayahu 11:1 we read: וְיִפּוֹק מַלְכָּא מִבְּנוֹהִי דְיִשַׁי וּמְשִׁיחָא מִבְּנֵי בְנוֹהִי יִתְרַבֵּי “And a king shall come forth from the sons of Jesse, and from his children’s children the Messiah shall be anointed.” Who exactly is the first king that the Targum refers to? וְיִפּוֹק ????️ מַלְכָּא מִבְּנוֹהִי דְיִשַׁי… Thanks.

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

There is only one king being discussed here.

This passage is telling us that the Mashiach, Messiah, will be a descendant of Jesse, through his son David.
