Jacob and the Birthright

Question

When G-d said that "the older would serve the younger", was that a prophecy that Jacob would take the birthright and the blessing or was it just foretelling of the future? Could it have been a foretelling that wouldn't have come to pass or was it in God's will that Jacob would have the birthright and blessing?

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

The passage of "the older will serve the younger" (Genesis 25:23) is indeed the prophecy that the descendants of Jacob, the younger twin, would ultimately be more prominent than the descendants of the older twin, Esau. This was considered to be unique because as a general rule a firstborn was more prominent that any other child.

Yes, it also predicted that the birthright would also go to Jacob.
