Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question. Although I am unable to give you an entire life biography of King David. I will be happy to share a few words with you about the book of Jasher.

Actually, there are several works by that name. You’re probably referring to the medieval Midrashic work, which I’ll discuss below. But first, some background into the book’s interesting name.

The book of “Yashar” which means “straight” or “upright” in Hebrew generally refers to an ancient Midrashic work.

We find mention of this book in the Book of Joshua. After Joshua commands the sun and moon to stand still during a battle, the verse states: “Is this not written in the Book of Jasher?” So too, when King David eulogizes the death of Saul and Jonathan, he praised how they taught the tribe of Judah the use of the bow, and adds: “Behold it is written in the Book of Jasher.”

According to this, the Book of Jasher was an independent book.

The Talmud, Avoda Zara 25a, however, says that the book of Jasher is actually a reference to the book of Genesis, Deuteronomy, and/or Judges.

Furthermore, there are a number of ancient works and texts that were known as the Book of Jasher. However, the Book of Jasher that you are referring to is a book from the Medieval period that retells the stories of the Torah while weaving in Midrashic material.

Ultimately, however, the Book of Jasher was essentially lost and it’s credibility, authorship, and overall reliability is subject to controversy. It is not considered to be one of the holy books of the Jewish canon.
