Biography of Caleb

Question

Could you give a biography on Caleb was he a prophet?

Answer

Caleb, the son of Yefuneh, was one of the leaders of the Tribe of Judah. The name “Caleb” is related to the Hebrew word for 'dog' though, in this context, of course, it refers to the positive attributes of a dog. The name can also mean “of the heart.”

It says in the Torah (Numbers 13) that Caleb was one of the twelve spies sent by Moses into Canaan to assess the land in preparation for the Jewish conquest. Caleb and Joshua were the only 2 of the twelve spies to bring back a favorable report of the land while the other spies scared the Jewish people into believing that they would not be successful in the conquering of the land.

We are told that Caleb separated from the other spies to go an pray at the tombs of the Patriarchs in Hebron that he be successful in his mission and not be influenced by the other evil spies.

It is believed that Caleb is buried in the Arba village of Kifl Haris in Samaria and many people visit his grave.

He was a holy man, but he is not categorized as a prophet.
