Prohibition of wearing 'men's articles' for women, attitude to Esau

Question

Is Deuteronomy 22:5 a moral law, ceremonial or judicial law? Did God really hate Esau or did He just favor his brother?

Answer

Shalom,

1. The Torah says in Devarim  22:5: ' A woman must not put on man’s apparel, nor shall a man wear woman’s clothing; for whoever does these things is abhorrent to your God, your Lord '. This is a clearly stated prohibition. It is discussed in detail in the Talmud and halachic codes.

The prohibition is not limited to wearing clothes normally worn by people of the opposite sex, it includes other things by which one imitates the opposite sex, for example, a woman is not allowed to carry armour designed specifically for men, and a man may not remove body hair if it is only customary for women to do so.

2. God preferred Jacob to Esau due to Jacob's good deeds.

Yet when Esau began harming Jacob and fighting against him, God began to hate him. As the prophet put it ( Malachi  1:2–3): ' After all – declares GOD – Esau is Jacob’s brother; yet I have accepted Jacob  and have rejected Esau '.
