Non-Jew Attending Synagogue

Question

Dear Rabbi! I was invited to attend a synagogal service as a non-Jew. They say that the service starts at 9:30 but the actual communal prayer starts around 11 with the cantor's repetition. Is that so that the first part is completely silent? Is the Shma also silent? Thank you!

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

The Shabbat morning service is a continuous cycle of quiet prayers, public prayers, and cantor-led prayers.

While perhaps there will be more communal prayer at 11am, you can attend at any time.
