Seeking Spiritual Guidance on My Jewish Heritage

Question

Dear Rabbi, ‏Shalom. My name is Ibrahim Darwish, my age is 18 and I am reaching out to you with deep sincerity and heartfelt hope. ‏I was born in Lebanon, though my family originates from Sharqia, Egypt—a region that was once home to a vibrant Jewish community. I share my story not in search of personal benefit, but out of a genuine yearning to reconnect with the truth of my Jewish heritage, a truth that was concealed from me throughout my life. ‏I was raised in a secular Muslim household, yet I always felt that a part of me was missing. Gradually, I uncovered fragments of a hidden identity: my mother, Nira Ouf Ouf, is Jewish. I have vivid memories of her secretly reading from the Torah and whispering prayers in the dark. Over time, I learned that both of my parents were born into Jewish families in Sharqia, forced to suppress their heritage for their safety. I also discovered the name of Rabbi Moshe Douek (zikhrono livracha), connected to the Jewish community in Sharqia, and learned of my uncle Tariq, a devout Jew who disappeared under mysterious circumstances—an event that deeply affected my family. ‏Having grown up with unanswered questions, I now find that my heart yearns to understand Judaism not merely as a cultural legacy, but as a living faith and a profound spiritual connection that defines who I truly am. I wish to embark on this journey solely for its spiritual significance, as I desire nothing material but to embrace the faith and identity that calls to me. ‏I have already communicated my story to The Jewish Agency, seeking guidance on how to proceed. As I continue this quest, I would be profoundly grateful for your insight and advice on how I might further validate and nurture this connection to my Jewish roots. Your understanding and support would not only affirm my faith but also guide me toward the steps necessary to honor and revive my heritage. ‏Please know that this correspondence is shared under strict confidentiality, as I must carefully consider my safety within the contexts of both Lebanon and Egypt. ‏Thank you for taking the time to read my story and for considering my request for spiritual guidance. I remain hopeful that with your wisdom, I can find the right path to reclaim and live my true identity. ‏With sincere respect and gratitude, ‏Ibrahim Darwish ‏Lebanon
