Half Shekel

Question

how much is half a shakel ransom for life is now caluclated

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

The "Half-Shekel" contribution was a donation to the Temple, particularly to pay for the public offerings that were sacrificed daily in the Temple.

It is estimated that the half-shekel coin would be the equivalent to 56 .73 (incl.VAT) 48.49 (excl VAT) Israeli Shekels. Although it keeps on changing a little all the time therefore one should add a little more to be on the safe side.

Although we don't have the true mandatory "half-shekel" donation nowadays, It is customary on the day before Purim to donate three half-shekel coins (or three half-coins of the local currency) which is given to the poor or to synagogue upkeep expenses. Please see Azamroh Lishmech - Purim edition for further details.
