Corrections Officer on Shabbat

Question

I work as a corrections officer, maintaining the peace and order of a prison. Part of my job is being the first person to respond to assaults and medical emergencies in the prison. Could my job be considered exempt from the work restrictions of Shabbos?

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

It is best for a Jew not to work as a corrections officer on Shabbat. You should re-arrange your schedule and exchange shifts with other workers in order to get out of such work. There is certainly no dispensation for a person to drive on Shabbat to such a place of work.

In the event that you sleep at your place of work over the course of Shabbat you would, as a general rule, be permitted to respond to assaults and medical emergencies that arise.
