Finely Chopped Vegetables for a Dog

Question

Is it permissible on Shabbat to finely chop cucumbers, broccoli, and cauliflower that have been cooked for 7 minutes, as part of my dog food recipe?

Answer

Dear …,
You did not specify why the dog requires such finely chopped vegetables. If this is recommended by the veterinarian for health reasons or if the dog has difficulty consuming whole vegetables, it is permissible to chop them finely, but only immediately prior to feeding the dog. However, if it is merely a luxury for the dog, it is prohibited to chop them on Shabbat, and the vegetables should be served whole.
