Clearing a Warehouse for Guests on Shabbat

Question

Respected Rabbi, I hope the Rabbi will be able to answer before Shabbos. We have a snowstorm in our city, and my friend just called saying he is stuck in the city and asked whether he come for Shabbat with his family. I invited him, and the best place to accommodate him is the warehouse of the store adjacent to our house, which currently has a floor covered with unpeeled walnuts. The problem is that I am currently not at home, and I will only arrive home after Friday night prayers, and I cannot come home at the moment, and there is no one else who can clear the warehouse before Shabbat. The question is, can we transfer the walnuts to bags on Shabbat and move them into the store, which is part of our house?

Answer

Dear …,
For the purpose of a mitzvah, such as hosting guests, it is permissible to clear a warehouse even if it has not been cleared on a weekday, and it is permissible to transfer up to 42.3 liters for one person. Similarly, each person is allowed to move up to 42.3 liters. Therefore, you should fill a bag with up to 42.3 liters, and your friend and his family should each fill a bag with 42.3 liters, until the room is empty or at least suitable for staying in. Additionally, there is doubt whether it is permissible to completely clear the warehouse with a paved floor, so it is advisable to leave some walnuts on the floor.
