Repairing a Toy on Shabbos

Question

Shalom,Is it permitted to fix a child’s toy on Shabbos? And what exactly is considered “metaken kli” - repairing or making a utensil - in general?

Answer

Shalom uVracha,

A toy has the same status as any other utensil.

If it broke and requires reattaching or repair, it’s forbidden to fix it on Shabbos. Some say the prohibition is because of boneh (building), since one is 'building' a utensil, and others say it’s because of makeh b’patish (finishing the making of an item).

However, if it’s a toy that’s normally taken apart and put back together easily, and people regularly do so, then there’s no prohibition in assembling or disassembling it on Shabbos.
