Hand-fed Parrots - Petting and Carrying on Shabbos

Question

Shalom, we have at home about five hand-fed parrots (meaning they fly to the hand and eat from the hand, etc.). My question is: on Shabbos, is it permitted to take them out and pet them? Because if they are not taken out and petted (both), it really causes them tza’ar ba’alei chayim (animal suffering). Thank you very much.

Answer

Shalom uVracha,

For children, up until Bar Mitzvah, one may permit them to handle and take (the birds) out.

For those older than Bar Mitsvah, Lechatchillah one should not be lenient in this matter, though one who is lenient does have what to rely upon.
