Taking Ritalin on Shabbat and Holidays

Question

Is it permissible to take Ritalin on Shabbat and holidays? (For Ashkenazi) This concerns an adult diagnosed with attention disorder but who does not regularly take Ritalin. Taking the medication allows him to study and concentrate for several hours. Without the medication, he struggles with prolonged study. And also, is there a difference between Shabbat and holidays? Thank you.

Answer

Shalom Rav,

According to our Rabbi Hagaon, Harav Amrom Fried, shlita, Ritalin is considered like any other medication and is permitted only in cases defined as 'illness' for an adult.

However, giving it to a child before Bar Mitzvah is permitted in cases of distress.
