Making Tea on Shabbos

Question

Are you allowed to use a tea bag on shabbes, if yes why and if not also why? (if i use water from a kli shlishi)

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

It is the view of our rabbi, Rav Amram Fried, that tea bags should not be used on Shabbos.

He is of the opinion that tea leaves, and anything else that is easily cooked (known as "Kalei Habishul" in halacha) cannot even be made in a Kli Shlishi.

As such, tea should not be made on Shabbos with a tea bag or from a dry tea mixture placed into a tea infuser.

One should prepare tea essence before Shabbos and add the essence into a Kli Shlishi.
