Shabbat: Heating Food
Question
We are going on cruise that serves us kosher airline food. Can the goy warm up the food for us on shabbas if we don’t ask her to. Or else the food is hard to eat.
Answer
Shalom!
Thank you for your question.
It is not permitted for a non-Jew to do melacha that benefits the Jew.
In your case, the non-Jew would likely be violating the prohibition of cooking on Shabbos as well as the prohibitions of “shehiya” and “chazara” – the forbidden manners of heating food, in order to serve you your kosher meals on Shabbos. Therefore, it is forbidden.
