Software that operates on Shabbos

Question

I’m writing a small program for a client. Its job is to collect information from a website and put it into a table the client can view. Since the website information changes often, the client wants the program to run once a day.The program doesn’t run on my own computer; I upload it to an external server so it’s independent of me.My question is: am I allowed to set up this small program on the server so that it runs once a day, even though that means the code will also run automatically on Shabbos?

Answer

Shalom uVracha,

Anything that operates on its own is not considered as chillul Shabbos.

(In a case where something operates with a loud noise, there are situations where it is forbidden even though it runs automatically, because it appears like work is being done on Shabbos. But something that runs quietly Is not prohibited.)
