Reading aloud when studying
Question
I dedicate many hours to learning Gemara. After years of study, I’ve come to see that someone who doesn’t verbalize the words does not truly fulfill the obligation of Torah learning. Many times, I learn silently, just by reading… Was all my learning in vain? Also: Now that I already know one should verbalize the words, what if doing so reduces the quality of my learning?
Answer
Shalom Rav,
Reading aloud is not mandatory, but it is very helpful for understanding and remembering.
