Mezuzah scrolls
Question
We haven't changed our mezuzah scrolls for the last 8 years. My husband is stubborn about replacing the scrolls with new ones. While myself, after speaking to a chabad rabbi, am of the opinion to get them checked first and replace it if it's non kosher. My husband always feels that if something wrong happens like for e.g even if kitchen sink clogs or any financial setback or if I slipped on ice that means new mezuzah scrolls have to bought. I cannot argue and discuss this with him anymore to hold him from buying and replacing the scrolls. I have just told him do what you want that's it. Please give your opinion.

Thank you for your question.
Hagaon Harav Fried Shelita says that according to halacha once the mezuzah has been checked as written below, then it is forbidden to check more, etc since one may not doubt what chazal say that a checked mezuzah is kosher.
One is required to check one’s mezuzot “twice in seven years,” or, in other words, once every three-and-a-half years.
This is due to the concern that over time and age mezuzot will become invalid due to weather, temperature, moisture, and the like. Recall that if even one letter is rendered unfit, the entire mezuza is not kosher. As such, a mezuza in harsh environments should be checked more often.
In an emergency, one can check one’s mezuzah oneself. Simply examine it closely and should it look in perfect condition then nothing more need be done. This is only in case the mezuzah has been checked before by a competent scribe. Any question, however, must be posed to a competent scribe.
A mezuza removed for a few moments to be checked does not require a blessing to be recited when putting it back up. If the mezuza is missing overnight, a blessing would be recited when they are put back up, (of course only on the door post that is obligated with a Bracha). One always recites a blessing when putting up a new mezuza after discovering that the previous mezuza was invalid.
One whose mezuzah checking will take more than a day should first make sure to borrow replacement mezuzahs before taking down the current Mezuzah.
t's important to note that when taking down the Mezuzah to be checked, one should write a note indicating where this mezuzah belongs so that it can be returned to its original doorpost
In conclusion: There is a halachic obligation to check one’s mezuza “Twice in seven years” and one should be sure to do so.
