Lashon Hara from Parents

Question

If you hear one of your parents, either your father or mother speaking Lashon Hara to someone, should you interrupt and say that it’s not ok or should you better not as it is not respectful to interrupt in the middle of their conversation?

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

Since it's your parents, one has to be very careful how to stop them from speaking Lashon Horah. As written in Shulchan Aruch YD 240. Therefore, my advice would be to just try to change the subject. If that doesn't work, to say as a hint that "I could not speak about this subject It is difficult for me..." and they should understand.

If, for example, your father is speaking on the telephone, and so you can't change the subject, then the best is to keep quiet, and when an opportunity arises, you can explain the halacha without saying directly that they transgressed this Halacha rather just speak about it in a way and time you think they will listen.
