Voodoo Doll

Question

Someone bought a voodoo doll as a joke for a friend and then asked me if this might be considered avodah zarah (idol worship) or at least darkei Emori (forbidden non-Jewish customs). What is the halachic status of owning or giving a voodoo doll? Does it make a difference if the person actually believes it has spiritual power, or if it is only used as a practical joke with no belief at all?

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

It is absolutely forbidden to own such things, you must throw it away.
