Working in a Church

Question

Can I do electric job for a Christian organization. The room is being renovated for a church but will not have a cross in it. It's called a prayer room.

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question.

It is forbidden for you to accept this job and let me explain why.

It is forbidden to enter a place of idolatry, and Christianity, according to many authorities, is considered to be an idolatrous religion, at least for Jews. According to some authorities, Christianity is not considered to be idolatrous for non-Jews because they ultimately accept the G-d of Israel as the highest superior power. Any non-Jew who believes in our G-d is considered monotheistic even though they (the Christians) combine the belief in G-d with other figures. This is known as “avodah zarah b’shituf” and is considered to be acceptable according to many authorities.

In any event, it is quite unanimous that a Jew may not enter a church as, whether or not they are deemed monotheistic unto themselves, because their services all invoke other prophets and figures, which is incompatible for a Jew and Judaism.
