Mourning two years after relative’s passing

Question

Hello Rabbi, my name is Eliezer. I live in Israel. My father broke all ties with his family many years ago. Yesterday, when I was at a Bar Mitzvah, my cousin told me that he heard my father passed away two years ago. What do I have to do?

Answer

Dear Eliezer!
It was sad to read your question.
According to the law, since more than a year has passed since his passing, it is necessary to tear a piece of clothing that you are wearing and observe just a short period of mourning, and that is it.
The mourning that you have to do is to remove your shoes and to sit on a low chair, for a short period of time.
