Nichum Aveilim

Question

I wasn’t able to do the mitzvah of Nichum Aveilim because I was out of town. I bought a sympathy card but unsure of what to write in it. I know it should be short but I’m having a hard time seeing what is appropriate for a frum household. Any ideas?

Answer

Shalom!

Thank you for your question!

A condolence card to a frum family should be a few sentences or paragrpah expressing your sincere condolences on the passing of the deceased. You should mention some qualities of the deceased and any special relationship or dealing that you had with the deceased. The cards should then conclude with “Hamakom yenachem etechem betoch shaar avelei tziyon viyrushalayim” which means “May G-d comfort you among the rest of the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.”
