Shiva for an uncle who passed away

Question

Today my uncle passed away. My family is completely secular and does not believe or observe religious practices. In recent years, thank G-d, I have become stronger in my observance, and it’s very important to me to sit shivah and pray for the elevation of my uncle’s soul.Is it appropriate for a nephew to sit shivah? Is there anything special I need to know?

Answer

Shalom UvRarcha

I appreciate the good intention to benefit your uncle’s soul.

The seven days of mourning (shivah) are only observed by immediate family members. Therefore, you may not sit shivah for your uncle.

However, you can benefit his soul by learning Torah — especially Mishnah, which is particularly helpful for the souls of the departed — as well as by reciting Kaddish for the elevation of his soul.
