Sitting Shiva: Doing School Assignments

Hello, I am currently in university. I found out today that my brother who has been hospitalized is likely to be denied higher levels of medical care if his condition deteriorates; he may pass soon. I had previously told my teachers I would submit the assignments before the secular new year. I updated my professors on this, but am I permitted to complete an overdue assignment should I need to sit Sheva?

First you should try and speak to the staff if they can give you some more time considering your situation, if that didn't help and you will be at a loss by not doing the assignment then it is permitted to do it during Shiva.
